After Jo Fooks recorded her debut album Here and Now!, the legendary British trumpeter Humprey Lyttelton invited her to join his eight-piece band. Humphs fun-filled approach to music was to be a huge influence and through performing in his band Jo has also recorded and worked with Acker Bilk and played alongside Tina May, Joe Temperley, Scott Hamilton, Elkie Brooks and many others. Her mellow tone is often compared to Stan Getz and Zoot Simms.

13th December DAVE PRICE TRIO

Dave Price (piano) lives in Grosmont and is a frequent presence on the jazz scene in Herefordshire and the Borders. As well as playing local gigs Dave has backed many famous soloists including Art Farmer, Nat Adderley, Kenny Wheeler, Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott and George Melly. We love him, his enthusiasm and support.

Erika Lyons (bass) though now living in the Kington was once a London based professional (under her maiden name of Erika Howard) and also studied and worked in New York for seven years back in the 1970s. She really works her double bass, has amazing musicality and perfect pitch which keeps us all on our toes.

Dayne Cranenburg (bass) lives close by Hay and is a well-known bassist.  He has had a varied musical career playing with the band Gong at Glastonbury in the early 1980’s and as a session musician. He loves funk jazz and is a very popular character at Black Lion Jazz.

John Gibbon (drums) a resident of Hay-on Wye, has been involved in the Jazz scene since his youth and for many years ran a jazz night club which showcased the great acts of the day. John has toured the world being much in demand for his jazz drumming skills. He has brought depth to Black Lion Jazz as well as variety to our programme introducing some of his old friends like the Phil Mead Trio, Jim Mullen and Art Themen.
