The Old Black Lion in Hay-On-Wye was awarded Two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, whilst maintaining Four Star AA rated accommodation on Thursday 4th August 2022. The Old Black Lion is a restaurant and B&B, welcoming guests to stay and enjoy a delicious meal.
Owners Gillian and James Walton took over the business in July 2021, when businesses started to re-open after the COVID lockdown. Building upon the good reputation already in place, with the high quality of dishes being produced, and a great team in place Two Rosettes became the goal – not only for their customers, staff and the business but also for the town of Hay-On-Wye.
The kitchen team, which is led by Head Chef Mark Turton and assisted by Sous Chef David Hill and Chef Geraint Jones, are passionate about food and the menu they put together. Head Chef Mark commented “We use fresh, local produce in our dishes, which are all prepared from scratch. Sourcing local ingredients from local suppliers is integral to the food we serve.”
The Old Black Lion closed for a month in January 2022 to allow time for some renovation works to the restaurant and bar area as well as starting a rolling program to redecorate the bedrooms. “We want guests to enjoy fantastic food in a relaxed environment. Additionally, we want guests to feel welcome from the moment they walk through the door whether it is a meal out, a special occasion or they stay with us.” says Gillian.
A key part of their business is supporting the town and the community. James commented “By working with local businesses, such as local breweries and distilleries, we will ensure people visiting the area have a great experience and return time and time again.”
The Old Black Lion is situated at the end of Lion Street in Hay-On-Wye, a short walk from the town. They welcome boots and paws and have additional outside dining areas. The Old Black Lion is also available to hire for functions. The Old Black Lion has been awarded The Gold Great Food Award 2022 and keeps its Four Star AA rating for accommodation.
