The Old Black Lion Inn is privately owned and personally managed by the resident proprietor Dolan Leighton who looks forward to welcoming you as her guest.

An historic 17th Century Inn, it is situated close to what was known as the Lion Gate, one of the original entrances into the medieval walled town of Hay-on-Wye. It is believed that parts of the building date back to the 1300’s with features that are similar to those in the old Castle building suggesting that part of the original structure may have been built at the same time as one of the Castle building phases. The Old Black Lion certainly has a colourful history and it is reputed that Oliver Cromwell stayed at the Inn whilst the Roundheads besieged Hay Castle, which was then a loyalist stronghold.

Hay-on-Wye is within the Brecon Beacons National Park with some of the most stunning scenery in Wales. It is an international destination for bibliophiles, with over twenty fascinating bookshops to browse, many selling specialist and collectable books. There are also many boutique shops and so much to be discovered, for example what must be one of the most luxurious small cinemas in the country! There is a popular market every Thursday held just below the Castle walls selling local produce and crafts.
